The Ph.D. degree in Marketing at the University of British Columbia prepares students for academic positions at research universities. The goal of our doctoral program is to develop active researchers who can make a contribution to knowledge. Our program is recognized globally in terms of research achievements, research grants, publications, and graduate placements. Our students have won numerous awards for their research. Recent awards include:
-2010: PDMA Dissertation Proposal Award - Ravi Mehta
-2010: SCP Dissertation Proposal Award - Brent McFerran
-2010: Park Prize for Outstanding Contribution to JCP - Kelley Main
-2009: SCP Dissertation Proposal Award - Miranda Goode
Students can specialize in one of two streams of study, consumer behaviour or quantitative marketing modeling. Students interested in the psychological aspects of consumer behavior such as how consumers process marketing information and make decisions, choose the consumer behaviour stream. Students with a quantitative background, who are interested in how firms make marketing decisions, or in measuring the effects of those decisions, choose the quantitative stream.
The program is designed to provide students with the theoretical knowledge and methodological skills necessary to be productive researchers. Significant interaction and collaboration with faculty is critical to this productivity. Our faculty is a group of highly active researchers who have published in the top journals within the field, including the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of Consumer Research, Marketing Science, and the Journal of Marketing. All of our faculty actively mentor students and involve them in research projects. You are encouraged to visit the faculty page to learn more about faculty members and their areas of research.
The Ph.D. program is extremely selective. We admit 2-3 of the most promising students annually. We look for a combination of prior research experience, an excellent academic record, and good oral and written communication skills. The academic backgrounds of admitted students typically are in economics, psychology, statistics, engineering, business or mathematics. Although many students enter the program with a Master's degree, we do not require graduate degrees for admission to the doctoral program
Our faculty members are dedicated to ensuring that all students have a positive and productive doctoral experience. Students accepted into the program benefit from a supportive environment with close collaboration between doctoral students and faculty members. Every student is guaranteed full financial support for four years. By admitting only a few students each year, we ensure that all students in the program have opportunities to interact with multiple faculty members.
